Written by on March 12, 2012 in Events

Ask Nanima? home industry expo, Durban, was held at the Overport `Secondary School, the first one in Kwa Zulu Natal.

Ask Nanima? is Gauteng based, but due to requests from home industry entrepreneurs in Durban,  agreed to have the expo here to test the waters outside of her home base. Although It was on a much smaller scale than the previous Gauteng expos and despite the heat factor, the turn out and feedback was positive.

Home industries represented were baked goods, hot food, kitchenware, cosmetics, health/organic products, toys, home made snacks, baking, spices, pampering services, educational books, clothing, accessories and handmade arts and crafts.  There was a jumping castle and face painting for the kiddies.

The expo provided some much needed exposure to many home industry specialists in the Durban area as well local charities like the NSRI and Darul Ihsan. The expo also gave many an opportunity to declutter their homes as they could either donate or sell their “duchaaz” – unwanted items. An entire van load of old clothing, shoes and home items  were collected by Darul Ihsaan, thanks to the generosity of the community.

Excellent traffic,  parking control and security were  provided by Ahmed Vawda from Cheeky’s Security which helped greatly.

Ask Nanima? team would like thank the community for their support and assistance especially the principal Dr Omar and  Neville of Overport Secondary School for support throughout the expo. The facilities and service provided by the school were excellent.

Ask Nanima Home Industry Expo by  Hasina Gori

Kids market, garage sale and countless grannies made the Ask Nanina Home Industry Expo at the Overport Secondary School, last month, a unique event.

The  event was held for the first time in Kwa Zulu Natal on the 26th February, after the many request received by the organizers, following the two successful fair held in Gatueng last year.

The home industry expo was held by Ask Nanima, the popular online site for everything from promoting your products, sharing recipes making friends and even meeting your other half.

The aim of the fair was to showcase home industries and charities in Durban.

“Our main focus is to find those breadwinner type nanimas, especially those similar to my own nanima who are working to educate their kids. In Durban for the first time, I feel we have achieved this goal.”, Nanima explained.

The Bachoopreneurs market which gave children a chance to sell their products added a cuteness factor to the expo. Two proud young sales kids, were Husna,6, and Uwais Bhayat, 4, ran a stall called Incredible Kids. They sold all the things that make children’s hearts skip a beat, crayons, Barbies, Maisto cars and games. According to mum, Salma Bhayat “the kids thoroughly enjoyed the event” and also learnt the value of money.

After a day of sales, Husna had this to say, “it was so nice to sell all our stuff but its hard work making money.”

A novel idea introduced was the Duchaaz drop off campaign.  Nanima explained “this (campaign) encourage people to declutter their homes from all unwanted stuff and donate to a worthy cause.”

In Durban a van load “duchaaz” were donated to Darul Ihsan.

According to organizers, “There were over 100 applications but to ensure that the event was unique and home industry based, around 50 exhibitors and over 10 “bachoopreneurs”  (kiddie entrepreneurs) were chosen. ”

The public was also given chance to nominate stalls to a worthy home industry that required exposure. The nominated nanimas where given a stall free of charge.

Despite the unforgiving February heat, which no one warned the Gauteng visitors of, the expo attracted many. The curious came to put a face to the “granny” and her family, Madala, Bachoo and Poiroo, behind the page and others to stock up on the goodies advertised daily on the page.

Ask Nanima is portal that aims to  connect home industry entrepreneurs to potential users of those products and services on offer.
